One of the challenges with mounting steppers to micrometers is that the motor has to move along with the micrometer handle, or the shaft coupling needs to allow a lot of axial movement. The plan at the moment is to mount the motors to the parts of the stage that move along with the micrometer. A few drawbacks to this method is that it adds weight to the stage, likely lowering its resonant frequency. Since the goal is a low-cost, wide field of view STM, I’ve opted to take the risk of the vibrations.
